Nothing says there's going to be a war in the neighborhood quite like the appearance of tanks. Especially if there are tanks on both sides. They will be your toughest individual opponents. But this one is your friend. Let's get a closer look at our first tank model, and I'll share a look at how they fit in a game that is about throwing firecrackers in the back yard.
The basic premise of Firecracker Fight is using your bottomless sack of firecrackers to blow up wave after wave of enemies. We're still designing the enemy tank, because it has some special features I'll talk about in a future blog, but some game levels will have friendly vehicles too.
Typical game levels start with "Pick off support trucks moving to and from the combat zone," and "There are lines of insurgents all the way to the hedge! Brace yourself for a long fight." The main challenge is to throw accurately and quickly enough to clear the enemies before their sustained fire drains your health bar. But we'll use this allied tank for challenge levels like this one:
Level 9: "Close Air Support"
Our tank is surrounded and out of ammo. Clear the enemy.
On levels like that, you have to be even more accurate, to get the bad guys without hurting your own. In game design terms, it pulls you in by opening up unexpected constraints, which you need to explore. You might have realized firecrackers do damage in an area, but now you have to learn the extent of that area. Can I get close enough for just the enemies nearest my tank? How bad is it if that tank takes some damage? They're pretty tough, right? And different firecrackers, do they have different blast areas?
Well, what do you think?
Different friends and foes, different firecrackers, and the variety of level types all combine to make it an interesting back yard to play in.
Now, one more little thing. I've just gotten a look at the model for the enemy tank, and I like it! This will be the serious enemy. You'll learn within your first encounter that commandeered cars and retrofitted pickup trucks just aren't in the same league as battle tanks. When your mean neighbor wants to hit you harder, it will be with one of these. Anyway just a preview for now, with color art coming soon.
