Today in part 2 of Character Profiles, here's more about the best friend/worst enemy who is challenging you to a Firecracker Fight. A Character Profile is a writing technique I use to dial in the attitude and language of each character, so they will be believable.
I include this in case it's useful for any readers' own work. Each character gets a summary, and some Situations, Reactions, and Phrases.
And if these updates interest you in Firecracker Fight, remember to get on the email list. You'll get our Weekly Roundup, and a personal invitation when the game is live on the App Store and Google Play!
Chad - your bullying friend
(Some of this is from a prior Blog Post (Day 3) but it worked for my character profile too!)
Chad is the kid down the block who would invite you over to play but then use you as the main character in his reenactment of Houdini's most dangerous escape stunts. He seems to have money, but ends up stealing your favorite toys. We have mixed feelings about him, because he has set up the most epic battle, with his army of dangerously realistic model tanks, against your entire summer firecracker stash. It might cost you everything, but you have to beat him this time.
He's smug and gleeful at your worst defeats, but he's nearly in tears when you thrash his armies in the hardest levels.
You beat an easy level
Reaction: Mocking compliment
You beat a hard level
Reaction: Pouty disappointment. Snappy.
You lose an easy level
You lose a hard level
Reaction: Smug satisfaction
So how does all that translate into game script? Here are a few examples.
Level 3 is the first time after the introduction where the enemy starts shooting back, and you can actually lose rather than just moving along.
Chad's intro: War is on! My insurgents are shooting back, so if you don't blow them up fast enough, it's game over!
Chad's response if you lose: I guess that proves who's better at this game! Don't give up now though. I've got lots more toys to fight with.
Chad's response if you win: Don't get full of yourself. I'm still going easy on you.
This character is your main antagonist so I'll leave most of his comments a surprise you can discover on your first trip through the levels of the game, on your way to Endless Mode!
